This April in my garden in Forest Park, IL, I arranged a temporary still life that I documented with this painting. It was inspired by the succulent trend in home decoration and by Andy Goldsworthy’s temporary art installations in nature. The succulent was just starting to grow again, and the rabbits were eating all the crocus flowers in the neighborhood. This delicate, white flower was the last one standing in my garden. The piece shows the happenings of nature in an urban environment and a transitional moment in the cycle of the seasons. It combines botanical art with more expressive painting--observable facts with painterly feelings. It is about balance, hybridity, and the quiet activity of nature.
